Excavation of an extensive occupation and midden site on the Manukau harbour was conducted prior to earthworks associated with the Auckland International Airport Northern Runway development. House sites, middens and associated earth ovens were found as well as burials. Of particular interest was a series of round, deep pits with straight walls and flat bases that are currently interpreted as rua kopiha. Excavations took place in March 2008 and September 2008 – March 2009.
